It will have elements of lodging, a temporary theater, and a restaurant, and will be operated in collaboration with local residents.
Born out of the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale, the facility will offer artworks in addition to performing arts.
Echigo-Tsumari "Kamigo Clove Theatre" in Niigata Prefecture was established in 2015 by renovating Tsunan Town's Kamigo Junior High School, which was closed in 2012. It is a performing arts center for the "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale" and also serves as a place for the reconstruction of the Kamigo area, which was devastated by the March 12, 2011 earthquake in northern Nagano Prefecture. The name "Clove Theatre" is derived from "Globe Theatre" in London, where Shakespeare was active, and "clove," a spice that goes well with Tsunan pork, a specialty of Tsunan Town.
During the festival, artists from Japan and abroad are invited to create works as artists-in-residence and then perform. We are also accepting applications from groups, both professional and amateur, for residencies, training camps, and performances of music, dance, theater, and other forms of art throughout the year.
In addition to lodging and a temporary theater, art works are exhibited in the building, and for a limited time only, the "Kamigo Clove Theatre Restaurant" will be open, where women (onnasho, local mothers) serve food while performing. In this way, the Kamigo Clove Theatre has various aspects and is operated in collaboration with the local community, making it a unique place to experience exchange.
Kamigo Clove Theatre is available for a variety of group accommodations. It is used not only for performing arts rehearsals, but also for educational camps and corporate training programs. In addition to accommodations, we also offer lectures on the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale and regional development, and coordinate regional exchange programs. Please feel free to contact us for more information.
